The Hawaii State Department of Education (DOE) is completing its third major revision of the Hawaii Content and taking a testPerformance Standards (HCPS), an effort started in the early 1990s. The DOE also developed tests called the Hawaii State Assessment that match the highest expectations for student achievement of its mathematics and language arts curriculum. The battery of tests that conforms to the No Child Left Behind requirements also includes nationally standardized questions from the Stanford Achievement Tests that allows the State to compare the performance of Hawaii public school children with national expectations.

For the Stanford Achievement Test (national standardized) portion of the Hawaii State Assessment, results are reported as Above Average, Average, and Below Average. See: School by school results

For the HCPS portion (questions testing Hawaii curriculum standards) of the Hawaii State Assessment, student results are reported as Exceeds, Meets, Approaches, and Well Below Proficiency.

The standardized test period for the Hawaii DOE is March and April. During this two-month window, each school can set its own testing dates. It is recommended that families check with each school to find out exact testing dates. Also, check annually as dates can change from year to year. Grades tested are 3-8 and grade 10 in language and math.

Hawaii Military Impacted Schools

According to a 2004 report by Strategic Research Group out of Ohio State University (contracted by HQ leaving for the school busUSPACOM), standardized test scores of military students in Hawaii schools are generally at or above national expectations. Hawaii public schools that over 90% of all military dependent students attend also generally report standardized test scores at or above national expectations. Scores are especially higher in elementary schools than middle or high schools.
